Booking hotels in China that accept foreign guests
One filter and you're covered Trip.com + chain hotels
Book on Trip.com with the "Accepts Foreign Guests" filter and default to international or big Chinese chains — they handle foreign passports every day. Bring your passport to check-in and the hotel does the police registration for you. If a small hotel ever turns you away, that's their paperwork, not the law: free cancellation plus a nearby chain hotel turns it into a non-event.
The "we don't take foreigners" wall isn't discrimination — it's paperwork. Three cards, the whole story:
The rule
Every hotel must upload your passport to the police (PSB) system within 24 hours of check-in. No exceptions.
The reality · The wall
Small hotels & minsu lack the system or know-how, so they decline foreign passports — even though refusals were officially banned in July 2024.
The fix
Don't argue — book smart: Trip.com's "Accepts Foreign Guests" filter, chain hotels, and a confirm message before arrival.
Book on Trip.com with the right filter
Trip.com (the international version of Ctrip) is the only major platform with a built-in "Accepts Foreign Guests" filter. Booking.com and Agoda have Chinese inventory but their foreigner info is often inaccurate.
| Platform | Foreign-guest filter? | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Trip.com | Yes, dedicated | Default choice |
| Booking.com | Weak / unreliable | Avoid for China |
| Agoda | Weak / unreliable | Avoid for China |
| Expedia | None | Sparse inventory |
Chain hotels are the safe bet
These essentially always accept foreigners:
| Category | Brands | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| International groups | Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Hyatt, Accor, Sheraton, Westin | Safest — book freely |
| Solid Chinese chains | Atour, JI Hotel, Orange, Vienna, Hanting Premium | Reliable — book freely |
| High-risk — avoid | Independent mom-and-pop inns, sub-¥150/night budget hotels in smaller cities, "minsù" guesthouses, leftover Airbnb private rooms (Airbnb exited mainland China in 2022 — remaining listings are unreliable) | Avoid when possible |
Two more habits that save you
Habit 1 — Book free-cancellation
If a hotel still refuses, you cancel and move with no loss. Free cancellation turns a rejection into a non-event.
Habit 2 — Confirm by message
Send this via Trip.com chat before arrival and save the reply:
First night = a confirmed international chain. After a long flight, don't gamble. Book a Marriott/Hilton/Atour for night one even if it's above budget. Switch to a cheaper approved place once you're awake and oriented.
When check-in goes wrong (the small problems)
| Problem | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "We can't accept foreigners" at the desk | No PSB registration system | Stay calm, don't argue. Ask for a nearby hotel that does. Open Trip.com support — they refund and find you a room fast. Show your confirmation screenshot. |
| "Your passport can't be registered" | Staff unsure of the process | International chains handle this daily. Or ask if they can do a same-day registration at the local PSB office. |
| "Booking.com said nothing about this" | Weak foreigner data there | Re-book on Trip.com with the filter on. Lesson learned. |
| "Arriving after midnight" | Everything's closing, you're exhausted | You already booked an international chain for night one — just walk in. This is why the first night is non-negotiable. |
| "Tibet / Xinjiang" | Special rules | Tibet: book the whole trip (transport + hotel + guide) through an authorized agency and get the entry permit. Xinjiang: major cities are fine; confirm each stop in remote counties. |
If turned away: (1) ask the desk for a nearby foreigner-friendly hotel, (2) call Trip.com's fast English support, (3) head to the nearest international chain — they almost always have a late room. Then sort the refund in the morning with your screenshot.
Quick checklist
- Book on Trip.com with the "Accepts Foreign Guests" filter.
- Default to international or Atour/JI/Orange chains.
- Choose free cancellation; message to confirm before arrival.
- Night one = a confirmed international chain.
- Tibet via authorized agency; confirm Xinjiang stops.
The "no foreigners" wall is a paperwork problem with a booking solution. Filter, confirm, and keep night one at a chain — and you'll never stand in a lobby with a rejected passport.
