3 days in Beijing
The essential version: the imperial centre, the south-side axis and one unhurried north-west day. It is full, but it does not pretend Beijing is walkable from one end to the other.
Best for a first trip when you want the major landmarks without turning every evening into a cross-city taxi ride. Book the Forbidden City before you fly; then use this as the shape of the trip, not a minute-by-minute obligation.
The central axis
Keep every major stop on or just north of the palace line.
Morning — Tiananmen Square → Forbidden City
Arrive with the passport used for your reservation. Go through Tiananmen Square first, then enter the Forbidden City at your booked time. Do not make a late museum reservation for this morning: the palace itself deserves several unhurried hours.
Afternoon — Forbidden City north exit → Jingshan Park
Walk directly to Jingshan after the palace. It gives you the roofline view that makes the scale of the Forbidden City understandable. If you still have energy, continue north towards Shichahai; otherwise go back to the hotel before dinner.
Evening — Shichahai / Houhai
Have a slow lake-side walk and dinner rather than adding another ticketed attraction. Use DiDi or the metro home; save your hotel name in Chinese before leaving Wi-Fi.

The south-side axis
Go south once; do not ping-pong across the city.
Morning — Temple of Heaven
Start earlier than you think. The park is as important as the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, and the morning is cooler and calmer. Check current entry and reservation rules before leaving your hotel.
Afternoon — Qianmen and Dashilar
Travel north towards Qianmen for an easy lunch and a street-level look at old commercial Beijing. This is a good afternoon to practise using Alipay, translation and the metro without needing a tightly timed ticket.
Evening — Wangfujing or a nearby dinner
Choose a restaurant close to your hotel or along your metro line. Leave space for jet lag rather than stacking a show or distant nightlife on this day.

Garden and skyline
One major garden in the morning; modern Beijing at night.
Morning and afternoon — Summer Palace
Give the Summer Palace the daylight and walking time it needs. Enter early, choose one lake route rather than every detour, and stop for lunch before the return trip. It is in the north-west, so do not combine it with the Forbidden City on the same day.
Evening — Olympic Park and Water Cube
After a rest at your hotel, go to Olympic Park for the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube around dusk. The big open spaces and illuminated buildings make a simple final-night walk.
Move: return to the centre first if you need a rest, then take the metro or DiDi north. Summer Palace guide · Olympic Park guide

Three-day essentials before you book
- Tickets: reserve the Forbidden City first, then build Day 1 around its entry time. Carry the passport used to book.
- Internet: get mobile data before landing; use Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps for the live route inside China.
- Payment: set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with an international card before the first metro/taxi day.
- One rule: if rain, heat or jet lag makes a day shorter, drop the optional evening stop — never the booked morning attraction.
