Zhouzhuang Water Town (周庄)
The classic Jiangnan canal scene: stone bridges arching over narrow waterways, whitewashed walls, and wooden boats gliding past. Zhouzhuang is the water town most foreign visitors picture when they hear "Venice of the East" — and it's an easy half-day to full-day escape from Suzhou.
What Zhouzhuang actually is
Zhouzhuang is a ~900-year-old canal town in the Jiangnan water region, often called "China's No.1 water town." The scene that made it famous is the classic Jiangnan "Venice of the East" image: stone bridges over narrow canals, whitewashed walls, and boats moving slowly along the water.
People still live here, but the historic core is firmly a visitor town now. The best way to experience it is to slow down — walk the lanes, cross the bridges, and stay late enough for the evening lights. Half a day covers the main sights; a full day (or an overnight) lets you actually feel the place.
Tickets & hours
- Combined ticket. A combined ticket of about ¥100 covers Shen Hall, Zhang Hall, Twin Bridges and other sights. There is a separate evening / night ticket for the lit-up town.
- Hours. The core sights open roughly 08:00–17:00, but the town itself is walkable all day. Hours can shift by season — check the official site for your date.
- Stay overnight. Day-trippers arrive mid-morning and leave by evening. Staying overnight lets you see the town without them, and the evening lights over the canals are the reward.
How to get there (from Suzhou)
Zhouzhuang is roughly 38 km southwest of Suzhou city centre. You have two realistic options:
- Bus — simplest. Buses run about 1 hour from Suzhou to Zhouzhuang, leaving from the South Bus Station / Railway Station area.
- High-speed rail + bus/taxi. Take a high-speed train to Kunshan South (昆山南), then a bus or taxi on to the town.
What to see
- Twin Bridges (双桥) — the town's most famous view, made world-famous by Chen Yifei's painting "Memory of Hometown".
- Shen Hall (沈厅) — a grand old merchant's residence, one of the town's headline sights.
- Zhang Hall (张厅) — another historic house, also covered by the combined ticket.
- Fu'an Bridge — one of the oldest and most photographed crossings.
- Gondola-style rowing boats — the classic way to see the canals from the water.
- The evening lights — the town changes completely after the day-trippers leave.
How long to spend
Spend a half day to a full day; overnight is optional. If you only have a morning, the Twin Bridges, one hall and a boat ride cover the essentials. If you can, stay for the evening lights — that is when Zhouzhuang feels like the postcard.
Stay overnight if you can. Zhouzhuang changes completely once the day-trippers leave — the evening lights come on over the canals and you get the bridges almost to yourself.
