5 days in Nanjing
The balanced city plan: the three essentials, then a slower lake-and-city-wall day and a respectful history-and-neighbourhood day.
Five days is the best first-trip length for Nanjing. It adds space for the city’s historic layers without forcing every serious site into one emotional or physical marathon.
Zhongshan Mountain
Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum → one second mountain site → centre.
Use an early start, choose only two mountain priorities and check the scenic shuttle live. This prevents the most common error: treating a mountain as an urban museum block.

Museum and Qinhuai
Nanjing Museum → rest → Confucius Temple and Qinhuai.
Keep the passport-linked museum session as the anchor, then return to the old city when lanterns and river life are visible. Do not turn a respected museum morning into a lunch-to-late-night rush.

Niushoushan
Niushoushan → return to central Nanjing → optional Xuanwu sunset.
Check ticket, gate and current shuttle arrangements before leaving. Keep the return simple and make the lake optional—the point is not to collect two paid destinations in one day.

Xuanwu Lake, Jiming Temple and a city gate
Xuanwu Lake → Jiming Temple area → Ming city wall → rest.
08:30 — lake first
Walk one chosen section of Xuanwu Lake before the day warms up. It is free, forgiving and a useful contrast after multiple ticketed sites. Do not attempt to circle every shore if you want time for the city wall.
11:30 — temple and wall, respectfully
Continue to the Jiming Temple area if current access works, then choose one city-wall section or gate. Temple etiquette is simple: quiet voice, respectful clothes and no photos where they are prohibited.
Afternoon — leave room to absorb weather
Use an indoor café, bookshop or hotel rest if rain or heat arrives. The lake and wall can move to the clear morning of Day 5.
Move: save 玄武湖, 鸡鸣寺 and your chosen city-wall gate in Chinese. Do not assume every wall segment uses the same entry point.
A measured history day
Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall → lunch → Yihe Road / Gulou neighbourhood.
Morning — allow time and quiet
If you choose to visit the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, check current reservation, closure and entry guidance first. It is a memorial site, not a photo opportunity: give it the morning, follow staff directions and keep phones discreet.
Afternoon — reset in a lived-in district
After lunch, take a quiet walk around the Yihe Road or Gulou/Nanjing University area. This is deliberately lower-intensity; it gives context to the city without pretending difficult history can be “completed” between attractions.
Move: use metro or a verified ride; save 侵华日军南京大屠杀遇难同胞纪念馆 and 颐和路. Confirm entry on the official channel on the morning.
Five-day Nanjing practical notes
- Book the museum before reserving the rest of the plan.
- Put the mountain outdoors early; keep a lake, wall or neighbourhood day movable.
- Use an eligible hotel that can register foreign guests and retain its Chinese address offline.
- Keep the same passport name format on all train and ticket bookings.
- Respect memorial-site rules and do not place it between an attraction and a dinner reservation.
