Before you go

• What it is: a single peak with the cable car (7.5 km, ~28 min — the world's longest passenger cableway), a glass walkway bolted to the cliff, and Tianmen Cave — a 130 m natural arch you reach via 999 steps (or an escalator).
• Cost: ~¥288 (A-line: cable car up, escalator + walk down). The glass walkway shoe-covers are included.
• Getting there: the cable-car lower station is in the city, reachable by bus 4/6 or DiDi. The "A-line" is the standard, smoothest route.
• Best time: 08:00–10:00 to beat queues; clear or lightly misty days. Avoid the thick fog that hides the cave.
• Time needed: half a day to a full day.

Inside — what to actually do

• The cable car: the slow ride up over the city and ridges is a highlight in itself.
• Glass walkway: a cliff-edge glass path — hold the rail if heights bother you; shoe covers are provided.
• Tianmen Cave: the huge natural arch; the 999 steps are the classic climb, or take the escalator partway.
• The 99 bends: the mountain road coils up in 99 switchbacks — visible from the cable car.
• Summit loop: wooden walkways circle the peak with lookout decks over the pillars below.

1. Take the earliest available entry and follow the route assigned by your ticket rather than trying to reverse it.
2. Allow a full day for cable car, summit paths, glass walkway and Tianmen Cave; weather or queues can add time.
3. Keep the show or dinner flexible because return transport from the mountain may take longer than expected.

On-site reality check

• Tianmen Mountain is in Zhangjiajie city and is not part of the National Forest Park ticket.
• Bring your passport, phone data, water and a light layer: summit weather can be much cooler or wetter than town.
• The glass walkway is optional; do not pay extra or force yourself onto it if heights are uncomfortable.

• Do not schedule a tight train or flight connection after this visit.
