Lujiazui Skyline

Lujiazui is Shanghai's vertical city: the Oriental Pearl, Jin Mao, Shanghai World Financial Center and 632-metre Shanghai Tower packed into one walkable financial district. The smart visit is one observation deck, one riverside walk and one ferry crossing — not four expensive towers.

First-time visitor essentials — the four worries solved

Passport: the streets and promenade are free. Bring the original passport if an observation-deck ticket is booked by name, and keep its QR code offline.

Payment: international Alipay/WeChat Pay works at major towers and malls. A foreign card is usually accepted at staffed ticket desks, but mobile payment is faster.

Internet: save “陆家嘴”, “上海中心大厦” and “东昌路渡口” in Amap. Cloud and haze determine whether a deck ticket is worth buying.

Hotels: staying in Lujiazui gives dramatic views but a business-district feel. People's Square, Nanjing Road or Jing'an are more convenient for a first overall Shanghai trip.

The official Shanghai government page lists the Top of Shanghai Observatory on the 118th floor. A 2026 city promotion lists the regular observatory ticket at about ¥180; prices, bundles and last-entry times change, so confirm in the official mini-program before paying.

A route that works

  1. 15:00 — Lujiazui station. Exit into the pedestrian ring near the Oriental Pearl and get your bearings above street traffic.
  2. 15:30 — one tower. Buy only after checking live visibility. If the top of Shanghai Tower is hidden in cloud, stay outdoors and save the money.
  3. 17:00 — walk toward the riverside. Pass the financial towers and use the promenade for the Bund's historic façade across the Huangpu.
  4. 18:00 — blue hour. Stay as building lights appear, then head to Dongchang Road ferry terminal.
  5. 18:30 — cross by public ferry. It is a practical local ride and one of the cheapest skyline experiences. Verify the current pier route before joining the queue.

Transport, tickets and security

  • Metro: Lines 2 and 14 serve Lujiazui. Follow signs for the exact tower; the underground malls and elevated ring make a short map distance confusing.
  • From the Bund: metro via East Nanjing Road is quickest. The ferry is more atmospheric but depends on operating route and weather.
  • Security: observation decks screen bags. Leave drones, large tripods and prohibited liquids at the hotel.
  • Weather: rainy windows, fog and summer haze can erase the view. Flexible tickets are worth more than a rigid sunset slot.
  • Queues: arrive before sunset on weekdays. National holidays can turn elevator queues into the longest part of the visit.

Useful cautions for foreign visitors

  • Do not buy “skip-the-line” tickets from people outside a tower; use the official desk or verified platform.
  • Keep your hotel name in Chinese. “Lujiazui” covers a large district and is not a useful taxi destination by itself.
  • The Bund lightscape and building façade lighting are not guaranteed every minute or every night.
  • Restaurants in flagship towers can require reservations and dress standards; nearby malls are easier and more flexible.
  • If you feel pressure in fast elevators, tell staff before boarding and choose the riverside route instead.

Before leaving the hotel

  • Check cloud base, rain and air visibility.
  • Original passport, ticket screenshot and a charged phone.
  • Save Shanghai Tower and Dongchang Road Ferry in Chinese.
  • Carry a layer for the windy riverside after sunset.
