Suzhou
2,500-year-old canal city famous for its UNESCO classical gardens, silk, and "Venice of the East" water towns. Just 30 minutes by high-speed train from Shanghai — perfect as a day trip or a relaxed 1-3 day stay.
Known as the "Venice of the East," Suzhou has been a center of culture, scholarship, and wealth for over a thousand years. Its classical gardens — miniature landscapes of rock, water, and pavilion — are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and some of the most refined examples of Chinese garden art anywhere. Marco Polo visited Suzhou in the 13th century and wrote of its "six thousand stone bridges" and thriving silk trade.

How long to stay
1 day is enough for the highlights (one garden + old town). Stay 2-3 days if you want to visit multiple gardens, the water towns nearby (Tongli, Zhouzhuang), and take your time.
Getting there & around
Suzhou is on the Shanghai-Nanjing high-speed rail line. Trains leave Shanghai Hongqiao every 5-10 minutes (¥39-59, 25-35 min). Arrive at Suzhou Station (not Suzhou North) for the old town. Taxis and the metro (Lines 1, 2, 4) cover the city; the old town is walkable.
Where to stay
Stay near Pingjiang Road or Guanqian Street for the old town and easy access to gardens. Most visitors come as a day trip from Shanghai, so hotels aren't strictly necessary unless you want to explore the water towns outside the city.
