Hubei Provincial Museum (湖北省博物馆)

Wuhan's top-rated sight (4.9 on Trip.com, 7,600+ reviews) and one of the best museums in China — and it's free, though you must book a timed ticket. The headline is the Zenghouyi bronze chime bells (曾侯乙编钟) from 433 BC — 65 bells, still played in regular concerts on the original instruments. Also here: the Sword of Goujian (越王勾践剑), a 2,500-year-old blade that barely corroded. A must for first-time visitors, and a calm, air-conditioned break from the Wuhan heat.

How to get there

The museum is at 160 Donghu Road, Wuchang District (武昌区东湖路160号), on the shore of East Lake. It has a South Gate (main individual entrance) and a North Gate.

• Metro (easiest): Line 8 to Provincial Museum / Hubei Daily (省博湖北日报站), Exit A — about a 5–10 minute walk to the South Gate (the individual entrance).
• Bus: routes 402, 411, 578 to "Provincial Museum" (省博物馆站) — also ~700 m to the South Gate.
• DiDi / taxi: show the driver "湖北省博物馆" (Húběi shěng bówùguǎn). Ask for the South Gate (南门) drop-off if you're an individual visitor; the North Gate is handy for exiting toward East Lake.
• Parking: southwest-gate lot (~¥3/hr, free first 30 min) but limited on holidays — metro is simpler.

How long to spend

• Minimum: 2 hours — rush the two headline treasures (Sword of Goujian, the chime bells) and leave.

• North hall upper floors: the 4th floor is the quietest — fewer crowds, and it holds the Liangzhuang Wang gold and the Yuan meiping.
• Free volunteer tours at 10:00 and 14:00 from the south-hall front desk — a great way to get the stories without renting the ¥20 audio guide (valid 3 hrs).
• Yunxian Man skull (郧县人头骨化石): a 1-million-year-old hominid skull that reshaped ideas about human origins — easy to miss, on the north hall's prehistoric floor.
• Stamp / postcard hunt: there are themed stamp points and a "Jing-Chu Impression" post office inside — a low-key souvenir for kids and collectors.
• Walk to East Lake after: the museum backs right onto East Lake — rent a bike or stroll the shoreline to decompress.

Things to watch out for

• Book ahead — no walk-up entry: timed tickets release 5 days ahead at 17:18 daily on the WeChat account "Hubei Provincial Museum." On weekends and holidays they sell out fast. Foreigners use a passport; you'll scan your passport at entry.
• Closed Mondays: the museum shuts every Monday (except public holidays). Don't plan a Monday visit.
• Concert ticket is separate and on-site: the ¥50 chime-bell show is not sold online — grab it at the south gate when you arrive, especially for the popular 11:30 / 14:30 slots.
• No flash, no selfie sticks, no outside food: respect the "no flash" rule at the Sword of Goujian — it's irreplaceable. Bags can be stored free at both gates.
• AC is strong: bring a light jacket; the halls get cold.
• Go early: the Sword of Goujian gallery queues by mid-morning — hit it first at 09:00.
• Two buildings: south + north halls are connected by an upper walkway; the treasures are split, so follow the route (south 2F sword → 1F bells → 3F Chu → basement concert → north hall) to avoid backtracking.
