XI'AN · FIRST VISIT

3 days in Xi'an

The essential route: one old-city day, one complete Lintong excursion and one southern Tang-history day. It covers the icons without pretending the Terracotta Army is a quick downtown stop.

← Choose a different trip length

Best for a first visit when you have three full sightseeing days. Reserve the Terracotta Army and Shaanxi History Museum first; the old-city day is the flexible one you can move around weather, arrival time or jet lag.

DAY 1

Old-city compass

Bell Tower → Drum Tower → Muslim Quarter → South Gate.

09:00 — Bell Tower and Drum Tower

Start at Zhonglou metro station and use the underground passage rather than crossing the traffic circle at street level. See the Bell Tower first, then walk west to the Drum Tower. Going inside is optional; the route works even if you only photograph them from the squares.

10:30–13:30 — Muslim Quarter food walk

Enter through Beiyuanmen, then continue through Xiyangshi and Dapiyuan instead of stopping at the first snack stall. Finish toward Sajinqiao only if your energy and appetite allow. Keep food portions small and share dishes so one heavy bowl does not end the walk.

16:30 — South Gate and the City Wall

Rest during the hottest part of the afternoon, then take Line 2 to Yongningmen. Walk a section of the wall or rent a bicycle if weather and rental closing times permit. Sunset and the first hour after dark are more comfortable than midday.

Move: Bell Tower and the food walk are mostly on foot; use Metro Line 2 from Zhonglou to Yongningmen for the wall. Food-walk guide · City Wall guide

Day 1 gives you a reliable centre point: once the Bell Tower makes sense, the old city becomes much easier to navigate.
DAY 2

Qin history in Lintong

Terracotta Army → Huaqing Palace → return to Xi'an.

07:15–08:30 — travel east

Leave early with the original passport used for booking. A pre-booked direct coach or DiDi is the least confusing option; the metro-plus-bus route is cheaper but requires more transfers. Save 秦始皇帝陵博物院 in your map before departure.

08:30–13:00 — Terracotta Army

Visit Pit 1 before tour groups peak, then Pit 3 and Pit 2. Read the full site guide in advance so you know whether your ticket and energy allow the additional mausoleum park area. Do not accept unofficial “shortcut” rides or private museum detours.

14:00–17:00 — Huaqing Palace, optional

Huaqing Palace lies on the same east-side corridor and is the only sensible major add-on. Skip it if the Army takes longer than expected or if you are tired; the gardens are better when you are not watching the clock. Return to the city for a simple dinner near your hotel.

Move: use one outward-and-return transport plan for the whole day. Do not schedule a fixed-time downtown museum that evening. Terracotta Army guide · Huaqing Palace guide

DAY 3

Tang-era south

Shaanxi History Museum → Big Wild Goose Pagoda → Great Tang All Day Mall.

09:00 — Shaanxi History Museum

Use your timed reservation and arrive early for passport checks. The collection provides the context missing from a photograph-only trip: why Chang'an mattered, how Silk Road objects reached the capital and what made the Tang period distinctive. The museum normally closes Mondays.

14:00 — Big Wild Goose Pagoda

Walk or take a short ride to the Da Ci'en Temple complex. Decide whether you want the temple grounds only or the additional pagoda climb, and allow time for security and ticket checks.

After dusk — Great Tang All Day Mall

Continue south when the lights come on. It is a modern pedestrian entertainment district inspired by Tang Chang'an, not an ancient site, so enjoy the performances and atmosphere without confusing it with the museum history you saw in the morning.

Move: all three stops belong to the same southern cultural district. Use walking, one short metro trip or DiDi rather than returning to the hotel between them. Big Wild Goose Pagoda guide →

Day 3 stays south: museum context in the morning, the pagoda in daylight and modern Tang-themed streets after dark.

Three-day essentials before you book

  • Passport: use the same original passport for reservations and entry; screenshots are not a substitute for the document.
  • Tickets: reserve the Terracotta Army and Shaanxi History Museum before locking the day order. The museum normally closes Mondays.
  • Payment: set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with an international card and keep small RMB cash as backup.
  • Data: install a working eSIM/SIM, Amap or Baidu Maps and DiDi before the first morning.
  • Drop first: if jet lag or weather cuts a day short, remove Huaqing Palace or an evening walk — not the passport-linked reservation.
