Dujiangyan Irrigation System (都江堰)

A 2,200-year-old hydraulic engineering system that still controls the Min River today — and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the best day trip out of Chengdu: easy by high-speed rail, far less crowded than the city sights, and you can pair it with Mount Qingcheng (青城山) or the Nanqiao "Blue Tears" night view in one day. Foreign visitors consistently rank it above the in-town museums.

First-time visitor essentials — the 4 worries, solved

Before you go

• Cost: ¥80 entry. Open roughly 08:00–18:00 (last entry ~17:00).
• Best time to enter: Before 9:00 AM to beat tour groups, or after ~15:00 to enjoy a quieter walk and stay for the night view.
• Ticket booking: Book on the "Qingchengshan–Dujiangyan" WeChat account or 12306. Avoid roadside "internal / combo tickets" — they are often bundled with Mount Qingcheng and impossible to finish in one day.
• Time needed: 3–4 hours for the irrigation system; a full day if you add Qingcheng or the evening in town.

How to get there

• High-speed rail (strongly recommended): Take Chengdu Metro Line 2 or 6 to Xipu Station (犀浦站). It's a cross-platform transfer onto the Chengdu–Dujiangyan intercity rail — you don't leave the station. Travel time 20–30 minutes, cost about ¥10, with trains every 5–15 minutes from roughly 06:00 to 23:00.
• ⚠️ Pick the right station: Buy your ticket to Lidui Park Station (离堆公园站) — it's a 5–15 minute walk (or a ¥7 taxi) from the scenic gate. Do not buy a ticket to "Dujiangyan Station": that one is 8–10 km out and costs a ¥20+ taxi.
• From Lidui Park Station: Walk straight out to Yangtianwo Square (with the giant reclining-panda installation), then 8–10 minutes on foot or a short taxi to the Lidui Gate (South Gate 1).
• Direct trains: A handful of direct intercity trains also run from Chengdu East Railway Station to Lidui Park (~50 min, ¥19) — handy if you're staying near the east side.
• Tourist bus: Direct buses leave Chadianzi (茶店子) bus station for Dujiangyan, about 1.5 hours. Slower than the train but door-to-station.
• Private driver: A full-day car runs ¥800–1,400 and makes sense for groups of 3–4 splitting the cost.
• Return warning: The last train from Lidui Park is around 21:55 and sells out on weekends/holidays. Book your return in advance.

How long to spend

• Bare minimum: 2 hours if you only want the three signature structures and the bridge.
• Recommended: 3–4 hours to add Erwang Temple, a viewpoint pavilion, and a relaxed lunch in the old town.
• Full day: 7–8 hours combining Dujiangyan with Mount Qingcheng (enter at Lidui Park, exit from Qingchengshan station so you don't backtrack), or stay into the evening for the Nanqiao night view.

Popular must-sees

• Yuzui (鱼嘴, Fish Mouth): the dividing levee that splits the river — the genius of the whole system. Windy out on the point, so bring a layer.
• Feishayan (飞沙堰, Flying Sand Weir): diverts floodwater and silt away from the city; best seen when the river is high.
• Baopingkou (宝瓶口, Bottle-Neck Channel): the controlled channel that feeds the Chengdu Plain — you feel the surging water up close.
• Anlan Suspension Bridge (安澜索桥): a bouncy rope bridge across the river, also called the "Couple's Bridge." Fun and a little vertigo.
• Erwang Temple (二王庙): the temple honoring Li Bing and his son, the builders of Dujiangyan, with stone carvings of the governing principles.
• Fulong Temple & Yulei Pavilion: Fulong Temple sits above the channel; the Buyun Corridor escalator (步云廊, ¥20 one-way) lifts you to Yulei Pavilion for a 360° overview of the entire system.

Hidden gems and local favorites

• Nanqiao Bridge (南桥) "Blue Tears" night view: After dark the covered bridge glows and the channel below turns a vivid turquoise. Lights come on around 19:30; the sweet spot is 20:00–21:00. It's the local favorite way to end the day.
• Guanxian Ancient City (灌县古城) & West Street (西街): cobblestone lanes with old-brand snacks and quiet teahouses. Go deeper than the commercial entrance strip — that's where it gets real.
• Yangtianwo Square giant panda: right outside Lidui Park station, the huge reclining-panda installation is a free, fun photo before you even enter.
• Songmao Ancient Trail (松茂古道): the old tea-horse road along the ridge. On weekdays you can have the ancient stones almost to yourself.
• Tianfu Source Corridor Bridge (天府源廊桥): a 10-minute walk from the core route — a calm spot to look back at the whole system before you head out.
• Panda Valley (熊猫谷): a smaller panda center in the hills, far less crowded than Chengdu's base and more active in the morning. Good add-on if you skipped the city panda base.
• Off-peak afternoons: enter around 15:00, walk the system in the soft light, then cross to Nanqiao for the night view — you dodge the morning bus groups entirely.

Things to watch out for

• Wrong station: Always book to Lidui Park Station, never "Dujiangyan Station." The latter is far out and costs a taxi you don't need.
• Return train sells out: Last departure is ~21:55. Reserve your return, especially on weekends and holidays.
• Gate touts: "Free / cheap guides" at the entrance usually lead to shopping and give wrong info. Use the official audio guide (¥20) or the free official app.
• Roadside "combo tickets": Skip the "internal tickets" bundled with Mount Qingcheng — you can't do both well in one day.
• Food and water inside: Snacks and water in the scenic area are pricey. Bring your own bottle (free drinking-water stations inside) and eat in Guanxian Ancient City or West Street.
• Slippery stones: Paths are wet and slick after rain — wear non-slip sports shoes, not sandals.
• Unlicensed taxis: At the gate, flat-fare unmetered cars wait. Walk ~200 m to the main road and call a DiDi instead.
• "Blue Tears" is a light effect: It looks turquoise to the eye but it's just lighting — don't queue for ages; the bridge is the photo, not a hidden wonder.
• Wind and sun: Yuzui point is exposed and breezy; bring a windbreaker, sunscreen and sunglasses.

After you leave

• Back to Chengdu: Intercity rail from Lidui Park to Xipu, then Metro Line 2 into the city. Last train ~21:55.
• Add Mount Qingcheng: The city rail branches to Qingchengshan station 20 minutes beyond Dujiangyan — a natural full-day pairing (take the cable car to save 2 hours of climbing).
• Dinner in town: West Street and Yangliuhe Street have old-brand snacks — scallion rolls, ice jelly, braised specialties — cheaper and better than the tourist traps at the gate.

Before you arrive — quick setup

• Train ticket: book 12306 (passport login) 1–2 days ahead; morning trains fill up on weekends.
• Maps: save "Dujiangyan Lidui Park" (都江堰离堆公园) and "Lidui Park Station" (离堆公园站) in Chinese for offline use.
• Shoes: non-slip sneakers; the area is large with steps, bridges and wet stone.
