Nanjing

Zhongshan Mountain — Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (钟山 · 中山陵)

The wooded mountain east of the city holding Nanjing's headline monuments: the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (中山陵), the Ming Xiaoling tomb (明孝陵) and the pretty Meiling Palace (美龄宫). Cool, green and walkable — a half-day that ties together modern and imperial history.

Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum at Zhongshan Mountain
Start early: Zhongshan Mountain is a substantial outdoor half-day.

First-time visitor essentials — the 4 worries, solved

Visa: No visa at the gates; the Mausoleum needs a free timed, passport-linked reservation — bring that passport. Ming Xiaoling is a paid ticket.

Money: Alipay/WeChat Pay at gates and the shuttle; Ming Xiaoling ~¥70, a combined pass covers more. Carry ¥100 cash.

Internet: Signal is fair on the hill; book the Mausoleum on Trip.com in English.

Hotels: Stay near Xinjiekou; the mountain is ~20 min by metro (Line 2 to Zhonglingjie (钟灵街) / Xiamafang (下马坊)) or DiDi. Book on Trip.com/Booking.

Before you go

  • What it is: Zhongshan (Purple) Mountain (钟山) — the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (free, timed), Ming Xiaoling (the Ming founder's tomb, paid), and Meiling Palace (the Chiang couple's villa).
  • Cost: Mausoleum free (timed); Ming Xiaoling ~¥70; a combined pass (~¥100) covers several sites; the shuttle bus is extra.
  • Getting there: Metro Line 2 to Zhonglingjie (钟灵街) or Xiamafang (下马坊), then walk or shuttle; DiDi to "中山陵".
  • Best time: 08:00–10:00 for cool, uncrowded steps; autumn for the gingko. Avoid holiday weekends.
  • Time needed: half a day for 2–3 sites.

Inside — what to actually do

  • Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum: climb the 392 steps to the blue-tiled hall; the view back over the city is the reward. Free, but reserve.
  • Ming Xiaoling: a tranquil imperial tomb path lined with stone animal statues — the most atmospheric spot.
  • Meiling Palace: a round villa on an island of plane trees — pretty and photogenic.
  • Shuttle: the sightseeing bus links the sites; buy the pass if doing all three.

A realistic mountain day

  1. 08:30–09:00: arrive at the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum area early; use the first hour for the steps and main axis while it is cool.
  2. 10:30–12:00: continue to one second site only — Ming Xiaoling or Meiling Palace — rather than rushing across the whole mountain.
  3. 12:00–13:00: lunch and water break. The walking distance and stairs are more substantial than the map suggests.
  4. 13:00–15:30: visit your chosen second site or take the sightseeing shuttle; leave the rest for another day if you are tired.

After you leave

  • Two names: "Zhongshan Mountain" (紫金山) is the same hill as the sites — don't buy separate tickets you don't need.
  • Complaints: 12345 tourist hotline, or the mountain visitor center.

Before you arrive — quick setup

  • Book: reserve the Mausoleum timed ticket on Trip.com in English with your passport number; buy the combined pass on site.
  • Maps: save 中山陵 (Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum) and 明孝陵 (Ming Xiaoling) in Chinese in Amap.
  • Gear: comfy shoes — there are real steps.

Plan this visit like a first-timer

  1. Start before 09:00 at Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, then choose one additional site rather than racing through the whole mountain.
  2. Take lunch and a water break before Ming Xiaoling or Meiling Palace; stairs and shuttle distances add up.
  3. Leave mid-afternoon and reserve the evening for a relaxed central-city dinner.

On-site reality check

  • Reservations and access rules can vary by site, so confirm them before the morning you go.
  • Wear walking shoes and bring water, sun protection and a backup battery; the mountain is not a single indoor monument.
  • Use the Chinese names 中山陵, 明孝陵 and 美龄宫 to prevent a taxi or map app from taking you to a vague mountain entrance.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not schedule the museum or Presidential Palace on the same day unless you only want a brief look.
  • Do not underestimate the stairs or arrive late in the hottest part of a summer day.
