Grand Canal, Hangzhou Section (京杭大运河 · 杭州段)

The southern end of the world's longest artificial waterway — a 1,700-year-old canal that once carried rice and silk from Hangzhou to Beijing. Today the Hangzhou section is a string of restored old streets, stone bridges, free museums and evening boat rides. It is calmer than West Lake, more local than Hefang Street, and one of the best free walks in the city.

• What it is: the Hangzhou end of the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The best stretch runs from Wulinmen (武林门) north to Gongchen Bridge (拱宸桥), with side lanes like Xiaohe Straight Street (小河直街) and Qiaoxi Straight Street (桥西直街).
• Cost: Free to walk. Water bus ¥3; tourist boats ¥30–120; museums free; Xiangji Temple ~¥20.
• Best time: 16:00–21:00 for the lit bridges and a night cruise; 09:00–12:00 for the museums (which are quietest then).

How to get there

• Metro to Gongchen Bridge: Line 5 to Gongchen Bridge East Station (拱宸桥东站), Exit B. Walk 8 minutes west to the canal and the bridge.
• Metro to Xiangji Temple / Dadou Road: Line 3 to Xiangji Temple Station (香积寺站), Exit C. Walk 5 minutes north to the canal.
• Water bus (the local experience): Take Water Bus Line 1 from Wulinmen Wharf (武林门码头) to Gongchen Bridge Wharf (拱宸桥码头). It costs ¥3, takes about 30 minutes, and is one of the best bargains in Hangzhou. Pay with Alipay transit code or a transport card.
• Taxi / DiDi: Say "Qù Gǒngchén Qiáo" (去拱宸桥) or "Xiǎohé Zhíjiē" (小河直街). From West Lake it is 20–30 minutes and ¥25–45.
• From Hangzhou East Railway Station: Metro Line 1 to Chengzhan, change to Line 5 to Gongchen Bridge East. About 45 minutes.
• From West Lake: Metro Line 1 to Fengqi Road, change to Line 5 to Gongchen Bridge East. Or take a taxi.

How long to spend

• Quick look: 1.5–2 hours — walk Gongchen Bridge and Xiaohe Straight Street.
• Standard visit: 3–4 hours — add the museums and a water-bus or short boat ride.
• Full half-day: 5–6 hours — walk both banks, visit two museums, take the water bus, and stay for dinner and night lights.

• Gongchen Bridge (拱宸桥): the iconic stone arch at the canal's southern terminus. Climb it for the classic view of old houses, boats and the water.
• Xiaohe Straight Street (小河直街): a narrow lane of restored Qing shops, teahouses, cafes and craft studios along a small canal. The most photogenic corner of the area.
• Canal museums: the China Grand Canal Museum (中国京杭大运河博物馆), plus the smaller Fan Museum, Scissors and Swords Museum, and Umbrella Museum — all free and good for 20–40 minutes each.
• Night cruise: a slow boat under the lit bridges from Wulinmen to Gongchen Bridge. Tourist cruises cost ~¥110–120; the water bus is ¥3 but stops before dark.
• Xiangji Temple (香积寺): a Tang-dynasty temple near the canal, rebuilt with a striking modern pagoda. Entry ~¥20.

Hidden gems and local favorites

• Dadou Road Historical Block (大兜路历史街区): a less touristy canal-side lane south of Xiaohe Street, with old trees, small restaurants and a more local vibe.
• Fuyi Granary (富义仓): a restored 19th-century grain warehouse near Dadou Road. Now a quiet courtyard with small exhibitions and cafes.
• Qiaoxi Straight Street (桥西直街): the strip on the west side of Gongchen Bridge. It is more museum-focused and less crowded than Xiaohe Street.
• Water bus at rush hour: ride with locals commuting by boat. It is not a tour, but it is the most authentic way to see the canal.
• "Dreaming on the Shangtang River" (如梦上塘): a night performance on the canal north of Gongchen Bridge. It is more theatrical than the simple boat ride and costs ~¥169–199.
• Canal-side breakfast: a few old noodle shops near Gongchen Bridge serve Hangzhou breakfast to locals — go before 09:00.

Things to watch out for

• Water bus queues: The ¥3 water bus is popular. On weekends and holidays the line can be long, and boats have limited capacity. Arrive 20 minutes early or avoid peak times.
• Museums closed Monday: The canal museums are generally closed on Mondays. Check before planning a museum-heavy day.
• Touristy Xiaohe Street: Xiaohe Straight Street is beautiful but its cafes and shops are priced for visitors. For cheaper food, walk one block to the main road or Dadou Road.
• Cruise booking: Tourist cruises may be cancelled in bad weather. Book through Trip.com where cancellation is clearer than at street touts.
• "Free museum guides" who sell: Some unofficial guides outside museums push teahouse or shopping stops. Use the museum's official audio guide or read the English captions.
• Walking distance: The interesting canal stretch is several kilometres. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water.
• Evening lighting: The bridges are lit from around 18:30, but the old lanes get quiet after 21:00. Plan dinner before 20:30.
• Alipay transit code: For the water bus, use the "Hangzhou Transit" QR code in Alipay — the regular Alipay payment code may not work.
