Beihai Park
The most relaxing half-day in central Beijing. Beihai is a 900-year-old imperial lake garden right next to the Forbidden City — a white dagoba on an island, willow-lined shores, and paddle boats on the water. After the crowds of the Forbidden City, this is where you exhale. Pair it with Jingshan: both are a 10-minute walk north of the palace.
What Beihai Park actually is
Beihai is one of Beijing's oldest and best-preserved imperial gardens — its history runs back to the 10th century. The Jin emperors dug the lake and built an island pleasure-park here; the Yuan dynasty made Jade Flower Island (琼华岛 / Qionghua Dao) the centre of their capital, Dadu; and the Ming and Qing kept it as the "Western Lakes" (太液池) beside the Forbidden City. About 69 hectares, and more than half is water — the lake itself. The icon is the White Dagoba (白塔) on the island: a white Tibetan-style stupa built in 1651 to host the Fifth Dalai Lama, and the view on every Beijing postcard. Other highlights are the Nine-Dragon Wall (九龙壁) — one of only two glazed nine-dragon walls in China — the Circular City (团城) with its giant ancient jade bowl, the Five Dragon Pavilions (五龙亭) along the shore, and Jingxin Zhai (静心斋), a miniature garden within the garden.
The garden follows a classic Chinese idea: an island in a lake stands for Penglai, the mountain of the immortals. So Beihai isn't just pretty — it's a miniature cosmology the emperors walked through. In summer the lake is full of pedal boats; in winter (Jan–Feb) the frozen surface becomes a huge open-air ice rink, a beloved Beijing tradition.
Before you go — the part that trips people up
- No advance booking. Unlike the Forbidden City, Beihai sells tickets at the gate — just turn up. Carry your passport as ID (it's a public park, not tied to a booking).
- Opening hours. Roughly 06:30–20:00 in peak season (Apr–Oct), a bit earlier in winter (around 06:30–19:00 or 17:00). The island, the Nine-Dragon Wall and the Circular City keep their own shorter hours and may close at dusk.
- Price. About ¥10 (low season) / ¥20 combined ticket in peak. The combined ticket covers the island / White Dagoba, the Nine-Dragon Wall and the Circular City. Pay by Alipay / WeChat or cash at the booth.
- Get connected first. You need mobile data before you arrive — Google Maps and most Western apps don't work in China. See "Prepare before you leave" below.
How to get there
The natural approach is on foot: after the Forbidden City, exit north at the Gate of Divine Prowess (神武门), walk past Jingshan, and Beihai's south / water gate is a few minutes further. If you're arriving independently:
- Metro. Line 6 to Beihai North (北海北), Exit B is closest to the north gate; or walk north from the Forbidden City / Jingshan.
- By bus. Routes 5 / 101 / 103 / 109 to the Beihai stop.
- By taxi / DiDi. Ask for "Beihai Park North Gate (北海公园北门)" — it sits just west of the Forbidden City / Jingshan area.
Inside — the route that works
Enter from the north gate (Beihai North metro) or the south gate (after Jingshan). A relaxed loop:
- Cross Yong'an Bridge (永安桥) to Jade Flower Island and climb the gentle path to the White Dagoba for the classic rooftop view over the lake and the Forbidden City rooftops beyond.
- Walk the lakeside path past the Nine-Dragon Wall (九龙壁) and the Five Dragon Pavilions (五龙亭).
- Circular City (团城) at the southwest corner — a separate ticket, but it holds a famous giant jade bowl and an ancient cypress.
- On the water. In summer rent a pedal boat; in winter (Jan–Feb) skate on the frozen lake — a uniquely Beijing experience.
- Exit from the gate nearest your next stop (Jingshan and the Forbidden City are a short walk east).

Buy at the gate — no booking needed. Combined tickets cover the island, the Nine-Dragon Wall and the Circular City:

Inside the park — what foreign visitors should know
- Language. Signage is almost all Chinese; English is patchy. The loop is simple, but keep the map from our guide / Amap handy.
- Internet / Great Firewall. Google Maps, WhatsApp and Instagram don't work without a workaround. Use Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps for navigation. Set up data before you land.
- Payment. The ticket booths and boat / ice rental take Alipay / WeChat Pay; some take cash, cards usually don't at the small booths. Set up international Alipay before the trip — see our Alipay & WeChat Pay guide.
- Toilets. Western toilets exist but squat toilets are common, and paper isn't always provided. Carry your own tissue.
- Photos & drones. Hand-held photos are fine. Drones are banned over the park and central Beijing.
- Crowds. Weekends and holidays get busy, especially the island and the winter ice rink. Go early or on a weekday.
- Health & safety. The island path is steep in places — wear shoes with grip. The lakeside is flat and easy.
- Etiquette. It's a former imperial garden, now a beloved public park — locals dance, sing and exercise by the water. Be respectful, don't climb the dagoba or walls, and ask before photographing people.
Do Beihai right after the Forbidden City + Jingshan. Exit the Forbidden City's north gate (神武门), cross Jingshan, and you're at Beihai's south side — three imperial sights in one walk, no backtracking. Save the boat ride for the lake's calm late-afternoon light.
Watch out for — scams & complaints
- Touts at the gates. Ignore "cheap guide" or "private rickshaw" offers outside; use the official entrance and booth.
- Taxi / DiDi. Use the app, not roadside touts who may overcharge.

- Pair it with the Forbidden City & Jingshan. All three are within a 15-minute walk; plan them as one north-of-the-palace day.

When to go
For greenery and flowers, come in spring (Apr–May) when the willows turn green and blossoms line the lake. For the best light on the White Dagoba, autumn (Sep–Oct) gives blue skies. And for something only Beijing does: winter (Jan–Feb), when the frozen lake becomes a giant open-air ice rink.
