Former French Concession (上海法租界)

The 8 km² of plane-tree-lined streets where Shanghai lived its 1920s–30s peak — and the district that makes foreign visitors feel like they've stumbled into a different city. Free to wander, full of cafés, boutiques and photogenic architecture, it is the most walkable and atmospheric part of modern Shanghai. The classic route links Wukang Road, Anfu Road and the smaller lanes in between.

Before you go

• Cost: free, open all day. Shops and cafés roughly 10:00–22:00; brunch spots peak at weekends.
• Best time: late afternoon into early evening, when the light hits the brick facades and the cafés fill up. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–November) are the prettiest seasons for the plane trees.
• What to wear: comfortable walking shoes — you'll cover 3–5 km on flat pavement and cobblestones.

How to get there

• Metro (best for Wukang/Anfu): Line 10 or 11 to Jiaotong University (交通大学), Exit 7. Walk 3–5 minutes north to the Wukang Mansion at the corner of Wukang Road and Huaihai Road.
• Also good: Line 10 to Shanghai Library (上海图书馆) for the northern end of Anfu Road, or Line 1 to South Shaanxi Road (陕西南路) for Huaihai Road shopping and the east side of the concession.
• Classic walking route: start at Wukang Mansion → walk north on Wukang Road → turn right onto Anfu Road → explore the side lanes → finish near Shanghai Library or Jing'an Temple. Total ~3–4 km, 2–3 hours.
• Taxi / DiDi: set the drop-off to "Wukang Mansion" (武康大楼) or "Wukang Road" (武康路). Avoid weekend afternoons when the streets are packed.
• Bike share: the concession is flat and bike-friendly. Scan a shared bike (Alipay or WeChat) to cover more ground.

How long to spend

• Quick photo walk: 1 hour — Wukang Mansion, a stretch of Wukang Road, a coffee.
• Recommended: 2.5–3 hours — Wukang Road, Anfu Road, side lanes, plus a sit-down coffee or brunch.
• Full half-day: 4–5 hours if you add Fuxing Park, the former residence of Sun Yat-sen or Soong Ching-ling, and a long lunch.

Popular must-sees

• Wukang Mansion (武康大楼): the curved 1924 "Normandie Apartments" at the Wukang/Huaihai Road corner — the most photographed building in the district. The best shot is from the pedestrian island across the street.
• Wukang Road (武康路): the tree-lined spine of the French Concession, lined with villas, former embassies and small courtyards. Look for the Romeo Balcony (No. 390) and the former residence of Bajin (No. 113).
• Anfu Road (安福路): the younger, buzzier sibling — brunch spots, bakeries, independent boutiques and the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre. Best for people-watching.
• Wukang Court (武康庭): a small courtyard complex at No. 376 Wukang Road with cafés, galleries and design shops — a quiet break from the street.
• Fuxing Park (复兴公园): a French-style park with a rose garden, lake and locals dancing and playing cards. Free and very local.

Hidden gems and local favorites

• Wuyuan Road (五原路) and Yongfu Road (永福路): quieter cross streets with small galleries, bakeries and almost no tour groups. Good for escaping the Wukang Road crowds.
• Hunan Road (湖南路) and Gaoyou Road (高邮路): residential lanes with some of the best-preserved old villas. Walk slowly and look up at the rooflines.
• Soong Ching-ling's Former Residence (宋庆龄故居): just off Wukang Road, a small museum in a beautiful garden (¥20, closed Mondays). Far calmer than the main tourist sites.
• Local breakfast: grab a fresh-baked scallion pancake or steamed bun from a neighbourhood stall instead of a tourist-priced café.
• Early morning: come at 7:00–8:30 AM to see locals walking dogs, buying vegetables and doing tai chi under the plane trees.
• Tailors and glasses shops: the nearby South Maoming Road / Nanjing West Road area has old-school tailors and optical shops that foreigners use for fast, affordable suits and prescription glasses.

Things to watch out for

• Weekend crowds: Wukang Mansion and Anfu Road are packed on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, especially 14:00–17:00. Come on a weekday or early morning.
• Traffic on Wukang Road: it's not fully pedestrianized. Cars, scooters and cyclists share the narrow street — stay alert and don't step into the road for photos.
• Overpriced cafés: some Anfu Road coffee shops charge ¥40–60 for a drink. Walk one street back for better-value local options.
• Queue traps: long lines outside famous bakeries or ice-cream shops are often social-media-driven and not worth the wait.
• Residential buildings: many of the old villas are still homes. Don't enter private courtyards or climb on walls for photos.
• Construction / lane closures: Shanghai renovates old lanes frequently. A "closed for renovation" sign may force a detour — Amap is usually up to date.
• Scooter delivery riders: they move fast on narrow lanes. Keep to the right and watch behind you.

After you leave

• Xintiandi or Tianzifang: two redeveloped shikumen-lane districts east of the French Concession — more polished and touristy, but easy to combine.
• Jing'an Temple: a 20-minute walk or short metro ride north from Anfu Road. The gold-roofed temple surrounded by skyscrapers is a striking contrast.
• Brunch or dinner: the French Concession has Shanghai's best concentration of international and local restaurants. Reservations help at popular weekend brunch spots.

Before you arrive — quick setup

• Maps: save "Wukang Road" (武康路), "Anfu Road" (安福路), "Wukang Mansion" (武康大楼) and "Jiaotong University Station" (交通大学站) in Chinese.
• Pair it with the Bund: the French Concession is a calm day activity; the Bund is the evening follow-up. Metro Line 10 connects both areas.
• Shoes: flat, comfortable walking shoes. You'll be on your feet for hours.
