Xi'an Beilin Museum (Forest of Steles, 西安碑林博物馆)
This is Xi'an's stone library: a Confucian temple complex filled with carved classics, imperial calligraphy, Buddhist sculpture and the famous Nestorian Stele. It rewards slow looking and a guide or translation app; without context, hundreds of black stone tablets can blur together.
First-time visitor essentials — the four worries solved
Passport: tickets use real-name information. Carry the original passport used for the booking and the QR confirmation; ask for the manual channel if the automated gate does not accept it.
Payment: current full admission is ¥85. Alipay/WeChat Pay is easiest; keep a bank card or cash for the staffed window and small purchases.
Internet: download Chinese offline translation and save "Xi'an Beilin Museum (西安碑林博物馆)" in Amap. Much of the value is in inscriptions, and English interpretation is uneven.
Hotels: Bell Tower/South Gate is the easiest base. The museum sits just inside Wenchang Gate, so it combines naturally with the City Wall.
Book correctly — the museum changed
The expanded museum fully reopened in May 2025. The official museum notice lists 09:00 opening, 17:00 last admission and 18:30 closing, with a full adult ticket of ¥85 under the current pricing period. It uses timed, real-name reservations and may stop sales when capacity is reached.
- Reserve through the official website, official WeChat account or Alipay channel. Third-party English platforms can be easier but check that the product is admission, not only a guide service.
- Use the passport name and number exactly. Save the booking number and QR code as screenshots.
- If the form will not accept a foreign passport, arrive early at the visitor service/ticket window with the original passport rather than buying from a street reseller.
- Special exhibition access and guided tours can have separate availability.
The route that makes the collection understandable
- Start with the Confucian temple axis. The old gates, courtyards and ceremonial layout explain why the collection is here.
- Move through the main stele halls in order. Prioritise the Kaicheng Stone Classics, Tang calligraphy and representative works rather than reading every label.
- Find the Nestorian Stele. The 781 inscription records the presence of the Church of the East in Tang China. Its display location changed with the new museum, so ask staff or use the current floor map.
- Finish with stone sculpture. Buddhist carvings, tomb reliefs and animal figures provide a visual break from dense text.
- Allow time for the museum shop. Rubbings and calligraphy reproductions make more meaningful souvenirs than generic street goods.
How to get there
- Metro: take Line 2 to Yongningmen Station (永宁门站), then walk roughly 15 minutes along the inside of the wall toward Wenchang Gate. Amap is more reliable than Google Maps for the final lanes.
- DiDi: set "Xi'an Beilin Museum (西安碑林博物馆)" as the destination. Do not select the wider Beilin District government area.
- From Bell Tower: a short DiDi ride or a 20–25 minute walk south-east.
- Best pairing: enter the museum in the morning, have lunch near South Gate, then walk or cycle the City Wall in late afternoon.
Language, guides and museum etiquette
- Use a guide if calligraphy is new to you. This museum depends on context more than the Terracotta Army. Confirm an English guide in advance; "English available" does not always mean a fluent specialist is on duty.
- Photographs: follow room signs, keep flash off and do not lean on stones. Rules can differ for temporary exhibitions.
- Rubbings: do not attempt to touch or make rubbings from displayed steles. Buy authorised reproductions from the shop.
- Quiet space: narrow galleries bottleneck around famous works. Step aside after taking a photo rather than holding the centre.
- Accessibility: the expanded galleries are easier, but parts of the historic compound still have thresholds and stone paving. Ask staff for the step-free route.
Common mistakes
- Confusing Xi'an Beilin Museum with the free Xi'an Museum near Small Wild Goose Pagoda.
- Arriving late and rushing the stone halls in the final hour.
- Expecting every inscription to have detailed English translation.
- Booking a "guided tour" online that does not include the admission ticket.
- Adding the Terracotta Army on the same half-day; they are in completely different parts of Xi'an.

- Original passport, timed reservation screenshot and payment backup.
- Offline translation plus the Chinese names of three must-see works.
- Comfortable shoes and a small bottle of water; use only permitted drinking areas.
