Xixi Wetland Park (西溪湿地)

Hangzhou's wilder, quieter water world — a 10 km² national wetland of reed rivers, lotus ponds and old water villages. Where West Lake is manicured and famous, Xixi feels like the countryside knocking on the city. Locals come here to escape the lake crowds, and foreign visitors who make the trip usually rate it the most relaxing half-day in Hangzhou.

Before you go

• What it is: China's first national wetland park — a mix of rivers, ponds, marshes and restored water villages. It is also one of Hangzhou's "Three Wests" (三西) along with West Lake and Xiling Seal Engravers' Society.
• Cost: Paid area ~¥80; electric boat ~¥60; hand-poled boat ~¥100/hour (2–6 people). The Fudi (福堤) and Lüdi (绿堤) areas are free to walk.
• Opening hours: roughly 07:30–18:30 in summer (Apr–Oct), 07:30–17:30 in winter. Last boat and last entry are 30–60 minutes before closing.
• Best time: March–April for flowers, July–August for lotus, September–November for reeds and persimmons. Morning is calmest and best for photos.
• Booking: Book on Trip.com or the official "Xixi Wetland" (西溪湿地) WeChat mini-program. The Chinese interface is easier with a local SIM or hotel help.

How to get there

• Metro to the main paid entrance (Zhoujiacun / 周家村): Line 3 to Xixi Wetland South Station (西溪湿地南站), Exit A or B. Walk 5 minutes to the Zhoujiacun main gate — this is the classic starting point.
• Metro to the free north area: Line 19 to Xixi Wetland North Station (西溪湿地北站), Exit E. This leads to the free Fudi (福堤) walkway and the north entrance.
• Bus: Routes 310, 356 and 506 stop near the wetland gates. Slower than metro but fine if you are already on the west side of town.
• Taxi / DiDi: Say "Qù Xīxī Shīdì Zhōujiācūn Rùkǒu" (去西溪湿地周家村入口). From West Lake it is 25–35 minutes and ¥30–50.
• From Hangzhou East Railway Station: Metro Line 19 direct to Xixi Wetland North, about 40 minutes. Or Line 1 to Longxiangqiao, then Line 3 to Xixi Wetland South.
• From West Lake: Metro Line 1 to Longxiangqiao, change to Line 3 for Xixi Wetland South. Total 40–50 minutes.

How long to spend

• Quick visit: 1.5–2 hours — walk Fudi or take one boat loop from Zhoujiacun.
• Standard visit: 3–4 hours — boat loop plus Hezhu Street and a couple of village stops.
• Full half-day: 5–6 hours — explore both free and paid zones, add a tea break, and take the hand-poled boat.

What most visitors love (the classic highlights)

• Electric boat tour: the standard A- or B-line loop from Zhoujiacun glides through reed channels and stops at Yanshui Yuzhuang (烟水渔庄), Shentankou (深潭口) and Qiuxue An (秋雪庵, seasonal). This is the easiest way to understand the wetland.
• Hezhu Street (河渚街): a restored water-village lane with snack stalls, teahouses and the famous white wall that reads "Xixi, stay a while" (西溪且留下).
• Lotus ponds in summer: from late June to August the ponds burst with pink lotus — the most photographed season.
• Hezhu Pagoda: a small pagoda you can climb for a bird's-eye view over the water village and reed channels.
• Persimmon Festival: in late September and October the old persimmon trees turn orange and the park celebrates with local food stalls.

Hidden gems and local favorites

• Fudi (福堤) and Lüdi (绿堤): free walking zones on the north side. Locals cycle and stroll here on weekends — much quieter than the paid area.
• Hand-poled boat (摇橹船): slower and more romantic than the electric boat. Charter one for an hour and ask the boatwoman to sing a local folk song.
• Wuxing Village (邬家湾): a lesser-visited corner with old houses, small museums and far fewer tourists.
• Hongyuan (洪园): the western section with old opera stages, family halls and fewer tour groups. It has its own entrance and a different atmosphere.
• Helium balloon ride: a tethered balloon near Hezhu Street lifts you 100 m for a panoramic view of the wetland. Fun on clear days, skip it if it is windy.
• Early morning birdwatching: the park is a stopover for migratory birds. Bring binoculars and enter at opening time.

Things to watch out for

• Mosquitoes: Xixi is a wetland, so mosquitoes are real — especially at dawn, dusk and in summer. Bring repellent and wear long sleeves.
• Sun and little shade: Boardwalks and boat docks are exposed. Sunscreen, a hat and water are essential in summer.
• Snacks are pricey: Food and drinks inside the paid area cost more than in the city. Bring water and a snack, or eat at Hezhu Street where prices are more reasonable.
• Pick the right entrance: Zhoujiacun is best for boats; Xixi Wetland North is best for free walking; Hongyuan is best if you want fewer people. Check your ticket matches the gate.
• Boat times: The last boats leave well before closing. If you want the full loop, start by 15:00 in winter or 16:00 in summer.
• Slippery boardwalks: Wooden walkways get wet and slimy. Non-slip shoes are better than sandals.
• "Free guide" touts: Guides at the gate may push shopping or overpriced boat charters. Use the official ticket office or Trip.com.
• Weather: Boat services stop in heavy rain or strong wind. Have a backup plan if the weather turns.
