5 days in Shanghai

The balanced city plan: three essential urban days, one literary north-bank walk and one complete water-town excursion.

← Choose a different trip length

Five days lets you see Shanghai as more than the Bund. The first three days cover the core; Day 4 follows Hongkou's literature and architecture, and Day 5 gives Zhujiajiao enough time to work as a town rather than a hurried photo stop.

DAY 1

Old city and the Bund

Yu Garden → old-city lanes → Bund → East Nanjing Road.

Enter Yu Garden early, keep the free bazaar separate from the paid garden and stay by the river until the skyline lights. Refuse unsolicited tea or “art student” invitations.

Historic Bund waterfront and Shanghai skyline
The five-day route still begins with Shanghai's clearest contrast: stone riverfront on one side, Pudong towers on the other.
DAY 2

Museum and Lujiazui

Correct museum venue → People's Square → one Pudong observatory → ferry/metro.

Verify the museum branch and passport procedure, then cross once to Pudong. Choose one tower after checking visibility and return by a clearly identified ferry or Line 2.

DAY 3

Former French Concession

Wukang/Anfu → Sinan Mansions → Tianzifang → Xintiandi.

Walk the residential streets early, use metro between clusters and end with dinner in Xintiandi. Respect private homes and keep doorways and cycle lanes clear while photographing.

Narrow historic lane inside Shanghai Tianzifang
Shanghai's western lanes reward slow walking more than a long checklist.
DAY 4

Literary Hongkou

Lu Xun Park → memorial → Duolun Road → Shanghai Postal Museum → Waibaidu Bridge.

09:00 — Lu Xun Park and memorial

Check the memorial's closure day and last entry. Read a short introduction to Lu Xun first; the park is also a living morning space, not only a literary monument.

13:00 — Duolun and the north bank

Walk or take a short ride to Duolun Road, then continue south to the Postal Museum if open. Finish at Waibaidu Bridge and the north Bund in late light.

Evening — stay north of the river bend

Have dinner nearby or cross back once. Do not add Pudong simply because it is visible across the water.

Move: save 鲁迅公园, 多伦路文化名人街 and 上海邮政博物馆; check museum days before departure.

Historic central Shanghai streets and city architecture
Day 4 turns north from the commercial centre toward Shanghai's literary and postal history.
DAY 5

Zhujiajiao water town

Line 17 → old-town walk → one official boat → early return.

08:00 — travel west before tour groups

Take the metro to Zhujiajiao and use the official local transfer or a clear walk to the historic area. The old streets are generally open to walk; individual gardens, museums and boats charge separately.

10:00–15:30 — bridges, lanes and one boat

Cross Fangsheng Bridge, walk the canal lanes and choose one official boat only after confirming route, price and final pier. Do not buy seafood or snacks without a visible price.

16:00 — return before peak congestion

Check the last practical metro connection rather than the theoretical final train. Keep the evening near your hotel.

Why this five-day route works

  • Every day stays within one river side or one neighbourhood chain.
  • Hongkou and Zhujiajiao add history without repeating the skyline.
  • The outdoor water-town day can swap with a museum day in heavy rain.
  • No excursion ends with a prepaid city show.
