XI'AN · FIRST VISIT

5 days in Xi'an

The balanced first-trip plan: three essential days plus a focused wall-and-calligraphy day and a quieter look at the imperial capital beyond the tourist core.

← Choose a different trip length

Choose five days if Xi'an is one of the main cities on your China trip. The extra time separates the City Wall from the crowded food walk and gives the Forest of Steles and Daming Palace enough attention to feel like places, not filler between photos.

DAY 1

Old-city food and landmarks

Bell Tower → Drum Tower → Beiyuanmen → Sajinqiao.

Use the Bell Tower as your orientation point, walk west to the Drum Tower and then follow the food route through the wider Muslim Quarter. With five days, there is no need to force the City Wall into this evening. Eat slowly, visit the Great Mosque respectfully if it is open to visitors, and finish around Sajinqiao.

Move: mostly on foot; use the metro or DiDi from Sajinqiao back to the hotel. Open the detailed food-walk route →

DAY 2

Terracotta Army and Lintong

One east-side excursion with Huaqing Palace as the only add-on.

Leave early, enter with the passport used for booking and give the Terracotta Army the first half of the day. Continue to Huaqing Palace only if time and energy remain. Do not attach a fixed-time downtown attraction to the return journey.

Terracotta warriors displayed in Xi'an's Qin mausoleum museum
Day 2 stays entirely east of central Xi'an, protecting you from missed reservations after an unpredictable return trip.
DAY 3

Tang culture in the south

Shaanxi History Museum → Big Wild Goose Pagoda → Great Tang All Day Mall.

Use your morning reservation at Shaanxi History Museum, continue to the pagoda in daylight and stay in the area for the pedestrian district after dark. The museum normally closes Mondays, so swap this day rather than losing it.

Big Wild Goose Pagoda and surrounding temple complex
The southern district works as one continuous day: museum first, historic temple second, lights last.
DAY 4

Stone, books and the Wall

Forest of Steles → Shuyuanmen → South Gate → City Wall sunset.

Morning — Xi'an Beilin Museum

Start with the steles while your attention is fresh. This museum rewards translation, an audio guide or a little advance reading: the power is in the calligraphy, historical texts and stone records, not a single famous object.

Afternoon — Shuyuanmen and South Gate

Walk through the calligraphy-and-books street toward Yongningmen. Eat and rest before climbing the wall; avoid beginning a full cycle in the hottest part of the day.

Late afternoon — City Wall

Choose a short walk or a bicycle loop based on weather, wind and closing times. Entering at South Gate makes the sequence easy and gives the strongest first view.

Move: these stops form one south-side walking line. Forest of Steles guide · City Wall guide

Day 4 has one clear theme: the written and built history of the old city, ending above it on the Wall.
DAY 5

The lost imperial capital

Daming Palace National Heritage Park → Yongxingfang.

Morning — Daming Palace

Go north-east to understand the scale of Tang imperial Chang'an. The archaeological park is vast and exposed, so choose a few key areas instead of trying to walk every edge. Bring water and sun protection; use the on-site transport if available and worthwhile.

Afternoon — rest or railway buffer

This is intentionally the easiest day to shorten. If you are departing from Xi'an North, keep luggage and train timing ahead of a final attraction.

Evening — Yongxingfang

Finish with a compact Shaanxi food market that is easier to navigate than a second full Muslim Quarter visit. Treat it as a tasting stop, not an obligation to eat every viral snack.

Move: metro or DiDi between the north-east park and your hotel; continue to Yongxingfang only if you want a final food evening.

Why this five-day route works

  • It protects the two difficult reservations: Terracotta Army and Shaanxi History Museum.
  • It separates the food neighbourhood from the Wall, so neither becomes a rushed afterthought.
  • It places Beilin, Shuyuanmen, South Gate and the Wall in one walkable south-side sequence.
  • Day 5 can absorb rain, laundry, a late train or a museum swap without breaking the core trip.
