Xi'an City Wall (西安城墙)
A complete 14 km Ming-dynasty wall ringing the old city. You can walk it, cycle it, or just climb the South Gate for the view. It's the most intact ancient city wall in China, and the easiest way to feel the scale of the old capital.
First-time visitor essentials — the 4 worries, solved
Visa: The wall is a domestic attraction, so entry is the same as entering China itself. Bring your passport if you bought the ticket online; some gates accept QR-only entry, others want to see ID.
Money: Gate tickets and bike rentals are easiest with Alipay or WeChat Pay. The South Gate ticket office accepts cash, but bike-rental deposits are usually mobile-pay only. Keep ¥100–200 cash just in case.
Internet: You need mobile data to book, pay and navigate. Get an eSIM before arrival or a Chinese SIM at the airport. Baidu Maps/Amap will show the wall clearly; Google Maps is blocked without VPN.
Hotels: Staying inside the wall puts you within walking distance of the South Gate. Bell Tower, Drum Tower and the Muslim Quarter are all nearby. Book on Trip.com/Booking and confirm foreign-guest registration.
Before you go
- Opening hours: roughly 8:00–22:00 in summer, 8:00–19:00 in winter. South Gate is the best-lit and most dramatic at night.
- Ticket price: about ¥54 for adults. Bike rental is extra: single bike ~¥45/3 hours, tandem ~¥90/3 hours.
- Buy online or at the gate. WeChat mini-program "Xi'an City Wall (西安城墙)" or Trip.com. South Gate rarely sells out, but book ahead on holidays.
- Choose your gate: South Gate (Yongning Gate, 永宁门) is the main, most photogenic entrance and has the best bike-rental station. East, West and North gates are smaller and quieter.
- Best time: late afternoon for golden light; evening for illuminated city views. Avoid midday in summer — there is almost no shade on top.
Inside the site
South Gate (Yongning Gate, 永宁门)
This is the grandest of the four main gates and the one most visitors use. Inside the gate you pass through a barbican and watchtower before reaching the wide rampart. It's also the starting point for the nightly ceremonies and the best place to rent a bike.
Walking vs cycling
| Option | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Full bike loop | ~14 km, 1.5–2 hours on flat stone. Bumpy but fun; stop at corners for photos. |
| Walk a section | South Gate to East Gate is ~3.5 km and has great Bell Tower views. |
| Electric cart | Available if you want the loop without pedaling; price varies by distance. |
Practical notes
| Topic | What to know |
|---|---|
| Language | Signage is bilingual. Bike-rental staff usually speak basic English. |
| Maps | Search for "South Gate of Xi'an City Wall (西安城墙南门)" in Amap/Baidu. The wall itself is impossible to miss. |
| Payment | Mobile pay for tickets and bikes. Some drink vendors only take WeChat/Alipay. |
| Toilets | Available near major gates; carry tissues and sanitizer. |
| Drones | Not allowed over or near the wall. |
| Safety | The rampart has no railings in some sections. Watch children and hold phones firmly — drops are final. |
| Etiquette | Don't sit or lean on the parapets; bikes yield to pedestrians. |
After you leave
- Food: South Gate opens straight onto the pedestrian zone around Bell Tower and the Muslim Quarter. Head north for skewers, roujiamo and biangbiang noodles.
- Drinks with a view: Several rooftop bars near South Gate look back at the illuminated wall after dark.
- Scams: Costumed "warriors" near the gate may charge for photos. Ask before you pose.
- Complaints: 12345 or the gate visitor center.
Pre-trip prep
- App bundle: Alipay/WeChat, Amap/Baidu Maps, DiDi.
- Cash: Small notes for water and snacks.
- Comfort: Wear closed shoes; the stone surface is rough. Sunscreen and a hat are essential in summer.
- Pair it with: Bell Tower and Drum Tower are a 10-minute walk north.
