National Forest Park — the Avatar Mountains (张家界国家森林公园)
The UNESCO landscape (Wulingyuan, 1992) of 3,000+ quartz-sandstone pillars that inspired Avatar's floating Hallelujah Mountains. One ¥236 ticket covers four days and free eco-buses — but since 2025 every entry needs a passport-linked, timed reservation. This is the heart of the whole Zhangjiajie trip.
First-time visitor essentials — the 4 worries, solved
Visa: No visa at the gate, but entry is real-name, passport-linked and timed since 2025 — book a gate and slot days ahead, and bring that passport.
Money: Alipay/WeChat Pay at the gates and lifts; the ¥236 pass covers entry + eco-buses, but the Bailong Elevator (¥65) and cable cars are extra. Carry ¥300–500 cash for village stalls.
Internet: Signal is decent at gates/viewpoints, patchy in valleys — download offline maps and bring an eSIM. Book tickets via Trip.com in English where possible.
Hotels: Stay in Wulingyuan town, 5 min from the east (Wujiayu) gate, so you can walk back both days. Book on Trip.com/Booking with "foreigner-friendly" filter.
Before you go
- What it is: four zones — Yuanjiajie (the Avatar Hallelujah pillar), Tianzi Mountain, Yangjiajie and Golden Whip Stream — linked by free eco-buses.
- Cost: ¥236, valid 4 days, includes park shuttle buses. Lifts/cable cars extra: Bailong Elevator ¥65 one way; Tianzi cable car ~¥72; a 4-ride pass is ¥238, unlimited is ¥298.
- Getting there: enter at the east (Wujiayu) gate if based in Wulingyuan; eco-buses run all day. From Zhangjiajie city, shuttle buses reach the gates in ~40 min.
- Best time: 07:00–09:00 entry (slots go first); Sep–Nov and Apr–Jun for mist. After rain = floating-pillar magic.
- Time needed: 2 days (1 rushed). One pass, two entries.
Inside — what to actually do
- Yuanjiajie: the Hallelujah Mountain viewpoint and the First Bridge Under Heaven (天下第一桥) — the postcard shot. Reach it via the Bailong Elevator (百龙天梯) in ~2 min.
- Tianzi Mountain: the Mihun Platform (迷魂台) panorama of endless pillars — many rate it the best view in the park.
- Golden Whip Stream: a flat 5.7 km walk along a clear stream under the pillars; wild macaques appear. Cool and easy, 2–3 hrs.
- Count your lifts: if you'll ride 4+, buy the unlimited pass; just 2 rides, pay per ride.
After you leave
- Two parks, two tickets: this ¥236 pass does NOT cover Tianmen Mountain — don't assume it does.
- Complaints: 12345 tourist hotline, or the park visitor center at the east gate.
Before you arrive — quick setup
- Reserve: book your gate + time slot on Trip.com or the official mini-program with your passport number, a few days out.
- Maps: save Wulingyuan (武陵源) and Wujiayu Gate (吴家峪) in Chinese in Amap; download the park map offline.
- Gear: comfy shoes, a rain shell (misty days), and water — valleys have few shops.
Plan this visit like a first-timer
- Use Wulingyuan as your base and enter through the gate that matches the day’s route; do not change gates casually once inside.
- Day one: go early to Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain; use park buses and lifts to protect your energy for viewpoints.
- Day two: slow down in Golden Whip Stream or another valley route; mist is normal and can be part of the landscape.
On-site reality check
- The National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain are separate parks with separate tickets and reservations.
- Carry the booking passport, a charged phone, water and offline maps; signal can weaken away from major stations.
- Eco-buses connect zones but queues and weather set the pace, so keep the itinerary flexible.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not try to finish the whole park in one day — it turns spectacular scenery into transport stress.
- Do not feed macaques or leave food visible; keep a calm distance and secure bags.
