Songcheng & Romance of Song (宋城 · 千古情)

A Song-dynasty-themed park built around one big multimedia show — "Romance of Song" (宋城千古情) — that is often called the must-see night out in Hangzhou. It is loud, colourful, a little cheesy, and genuinely impressive: flying dancers, real horses, and a stage that floods and empties in seconds. If you want one polished Chinese spectacle on your trip, this is the easy choice.

Before you go

• What it is: a recreated Song-dynasty town (streets, costumes, stalls, actors) plus several indoor and outdoor shows. The main event is the "Romance of Song" staged in a 3,000-seat theatre.
• Cost: ticket with show ~¥260–320 for standard seats; VIP/front seats cost more. Discounted student and local-resident tickets exist but are hard to buy on a foreign passport.
• Opening hours: park roughly 10:00–21:00 in summer, with last entry around 19:30. Show times vary by day — usually 14:00, 17:00, 19:00 and 20:00 slots.
• Booking: Reserve at least one day ahead on Trip.com. The evening shows sell out fastest. Choose seats in the middle of the front half of the hall for the best view.
• Language: The main show is mostly dance and visual effects; the story is easy to follow even without Chinese. Side shows are often in Chinese.

How to get there

• Metro + bus: Line 6 to Fenghua West Road Station (枫桦西路站), then bus 308, 1411 or 8202 to Songcheng (宋城). From Zhipu Road Station (之浦路站), bus 1411 also runs to the park.
• Taxi / DiDi (easiest for an evening show): Say "Qù Hángzhōu Sòngchéng" (去杭州宋城). From West Lake it is 25–40 minutes and ¥40–70 depending on traffic. Pre-book your return ride before the show ends.
• Tourist shuttle: Some hotels and booking platforms offer shuttle buses from downtown to Songcheng. Ask when you book.
• From Hangzhou East Railway Station: Metro Line 1 to Jiangling Road, change to Line 6 to Fenghua West Road, then bus. Allow 70–90 minutes.
• Driving: The park has a large paid parking lot (~¥30/day). Only useful if you are already renting a car.

How long to spend

• Show only: 2 hours — arrive 45 minutes early, watch the main show, leave.
• Standard visit: 3–4 hours — arrive 1.5 hours before the show, wander the streets, catch a side act, then the main performance.
• Full afternoon: 5–6 hours — explore all the smaller shows, photo spots and snack stalls, then stay for the evening performance.

What most visitors love (the classic highlights)

• Romance of Song (宋城千古情): the headline show — a 60-minute spectacle tracing Hangzhou history from Liangzhu culture to the Southern Song dynasty, with flying acrobats, real horses, and dramatic stage effects. Sit center and front-of-house.
• Song-dynasty streets: costumed staff, old-style shops, lanterns and archways. Good for photos and a little time-travel atmosphere.
• Earthquake (大地震): a 5-D interactive show that recreates the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. The front rows shake; audience volunteers are sometimes invited on stage.
• Love Song of Lijiang (丽江恋歌): an outdoor volcanic romance show with fire and water effects.
• Wedding-balloon throw: a short, silly street performance where a "rich merchant" throws a ball from a balcony to pick a "son-in-law." Fun crowd interaction.

Hidden gems and local favorites

• Fantasy Space (幻境空间): an immersive naked-eye 3D ride near the east gate. Cheesy but fun, and usually has a shorter queue than the main theatre.
• Strange Street (怪街): optical-illusion rooms and upside-down houses — a lighthearted 15-minute diversion, especially if you have kids.
• Shadow puppetry and folk acts: small stages along the lanes run puppet shows, acrobatics and folk music all day. Check the daily schedule board near the entrance.
• Off-peak afternoon entry: arrive at 14:00–15:00 on a weekday. The streets are emptier, you can see side shows without queues, and you still get the best evening show.
• Photo corners away from the main drag: the lanes behind the central square have fewer people and prettier backdrops.
• Impression West Lake alternative: if you prefer a real-lake setting, Zhang Yimou's "Impression West Lake" is staged on the water at night near Beishan Road. It is more artistic and less theme-park; tickets ~¥350+.

Things to watch out for

• Book the right seat tier: Standard seats are fine if you sit in the middle-front. VIP seats cost more but are not always worth it unless you are in the first few rows. Avoid far-side seats.
• Show times change: Always check the day's schedule on the official "Songcheng Performing Arts" (宋城演艺) WeChat account or at the park entrance. Do not assume the 19:00 show exists on your date.
• Food is overpriced: Expect theme-park prices. Eat a proper dinner downtown before you come, or budget extra.
• Transport after the evening show: Hundreds of people leave at once and DiDi surcharges can apply. Pre-book your ride 10 minutes before the show ends, or take the metro+last-bus combo.
• It is very Chinese: Loud music, bright lights and historical references that may be lost on Western viewers. If you prefer subtlety, consider Impression West Lake instead.
• Skip the arcade games: The park has carnival-style games that cost extra and are not worth the money.
• Keep your ticket: You need it for theatre entry and some indoor shows. Do not throw it away after the gate.
• Weather: Outdoor shows stop in heavy rain. The main theatre show runs regardless.
